The subject of this Figure Friday is the statistics from Dallas Animal Services (DAS), an organization that oversees several shelters, similar to what we call “asiels” in the Netherlands.
At the moment (February 22, 2025), the number of dogs exceeds the available shelter capacity by about 30%, meaning there is a crisis.
The data provides insight into the length of time dogs stay in the shelter after arrival. The dataset specifically describes all dogs that entered in January 2024. I’ve created a landing page to combine some numbers with a success story and bring the work of DAS to live.
Example contains:
- A px.strip visual (see image) with some adjustments to the colors and layout.
- annotations to show some statistics
- lots of inline styling which should be done in a separate file.
Figure Friday is an initiative from the Dash/Plotly community. Every friday a new dataset is made available with some basic code to show a visual and an explanation of the subject. People are invited to adjust the code and improve the visual or create a small app. The next friday a zoom session takes place where some explain why they made what they made and others can give feedback, all in a constructive and respectful atmosphere. In the thread on the community site people share their visual, code and a demo if possible.
