Figure Friday 2025-w21

CO2 emission figures per country, per period, limited to a few regions in Europe

The topic for this Figure Friday was various CO₂ emission figures from different countries measured over a long period. In my app, I narrowed the data down to Europe, focusing specifically on major shifts such as the dissolution of the USSR and the reunification of Germany — purely out of curiosity.

Result

The app displays CO₂ emission figures for several unique regions in Europe and allows users to select from a few regions I found particularly interesting to explore. You can choose a stacked view, which lets you compare the emissions of the former USSR with the combined total of its successor states. Alternatively, a non-stacked view makes it easier to compare individual nations directly.

Figure Friday is an initiative by the Dash/Plotly community, where each Friday a new dataset is shared and participants create a visualization or small app to extract insights from it. The following Friday at 18:00, there’s a Zoom session where some participants explain the thought process behind their work. In the community thread, people also share their code — and when possible, a live demo — to learn from each other.
